AWS Unveils Free AI Education for 100,000; Launches Aurora Express, Agent Plugin for Serverless
March 30, 2026 — AWS today announced the 2026 AWS AI & ML Scholars program, opening free generative AI training to up to 100,000 learners worldwide, with no prior experience required. The program, led by Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of AWS Agentic AI, aims to close the AI skills gap by offering a two-phase pathway: a Challenge phase covering foundational generative AI skills, followed by a fully funded three-month Udacity Nanodegree for the top 4,500 performers. Applications close June 24, 2026, and are open to anyone aged 18 or older.
“We believe AI education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of background,” said Sivasubramanian. “This program is designed to empower a new generation of builders with the skills they need to innovate responsibly.”
Alongside the scholars program, AWS revealed several product updates, including a new express configuration for Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL that creates a serverless database in seconds, an Agent Plugin for AWS Serverless, expanded IDE support for Amazon SageMaker Studio, and visual customization for the AWS Management Console. The company also kicked off its 2026 AWS Summit season with events in Paris (April 1) and London (April 22).
Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL: Express Configuration and Free Tier
Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL now offers an express configuration that reduces database creation to two clicks, with preconfigured defaults supporting connection in seconds. Users can modify settings during or after setup. Additionally, Aurora PostgreSQL is now included in the AWS Free Tier, giving new users $100 in AWS credits upon sign-up, with an extra $100 available for using services like Amazon RDS.
Agent Plugin for AWS Serverless
The new Agent Plugin for AWS Serverless lets developers build, deploy, troubleshoot, and manage serverless applications using AI coding assistants such as Kiro, Claude Code, and Cursor. The plugin packages skills, sub-agents, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers into a single modular unit, automatically loading relevant guidance throughout development to produce production-ready serverless apps on AWS.
Amazon SageMaker Studio Remote IDEs
Amazon SageMaker Studio now supports remote connections from Kiro and Cursor IDEs, allowing developers to use their existing setups—including spec-driven development, conversational coding, and automated feature generation—while leveraging SageMaker Studio’s scalable compute resources.
Visual Customization for AWS Management Console
The AWS Management Console introduces visual customization, enabling users to assign account colors, hide unused regions and services, and reduce cognitive load. This feature aims to streamline workflows by focusing attention on frequently used resources.
